Narooma wrap up
Climate change
Global warming affects everyone, no matter where they live. For me, it was always the big issue in this election. The Greens are pleased other parties are finally joining us in this, but dismayed they are still offering pie in the sky solutions such as “clean coal” of “safe” nuclear.
We want a practical policy framework to promote genuine renewable energy such as solar and wind. Burning native forests is expensive, not renewable and not clean.
The biggest cut in
greenhouse emissions our region could achieve is by ending native forest
woodchipping. A well managed plantation industry can have a positive role in
fixing carbon, especially when the product is sawn timber.
Health
The Greens convincingly outscored all parties in the National Rural Health
Alliance “report card”, which recognised our policies for more health workforce
and infrastructure and rural mental health programs
We want more preventive care and a universal dental scheme. I am disgusted that not one extra cent has been promised nationally by either big party on indigenous health.
Tax cuts or Services
The Greens believe mega tax cuts for
the rich are irresponsible and inflationary. Rural areas face critical deficits
in health, education and infrastructure services. The national interest is
better served by spending the fruits of the current booming economy on assets to
secure a better future, not short term consumption.
The future
I’m asking people to vote Green in
the Senate. We need more Greens Senators to hold the big parties to account. We
can’t get rid of WorkChoices without them. Liberal as well as Labor voters tell
me they are worried about climate change. They can vote for me in Eden-Monaro,
send a message to the big parties. Your vote will be counted twice, because your
preference will flow on at full value.
